Pet Assure does not offer traditional pet insurance. Instead, customers can purchase a veterinary discount plan that they can use at the clinics that have partnered with Pet Assure. While this restriction may seem inconvenient, the company has partnered with thousands of vets nationwide and inviting a new member into the offer is quite easy too. In fact, the Pet Assure plan lacks the drawbacks of pet insurance policies, such as coverage exclusions, deductibles, or waiting periods. The discount rates cannot be personalized either, which is a bit of a shame but it does keep monthly premiums low for everyone. All in all, Pet Assure could be a great choice for old or sickly pets that would otherwise be hard to insure, or its discount plan could be used to complement an existing policy.
Services and Coverage
Where traditional pet insurance falls short, Pet Assure picks up the slack. The company does not exclude anything from its coverage so long as the treatments are administered by a vet at a partnered clinic. The biggest bonus is probably how preexisting conditions are included, which no traditional insurance company offers. For animals suffering from long-term illnesses, such as diabetes, this is an absolute godsend. Wellness care is covered, as with any other provider. As are exam fees, breeding-related conditions, and spaying or neutering procedures.
All pets are accepted without exception. Any species can be enrolled, not just cats and dogs, which is both uncommon and very welcome. It is hard to come by an insurance company that offers coverage for more exotic pets, so this plan is certainly a good option for more adventurous owners. There is no age restriction and no health checks are required, neither beforehand nor after enrollment.
Another great bonus of Pet Assure’s discount plan is that there are no waiting periods. As soon as the discount plan is purchased, it is in effect, making this a completely risk-free investment. Insurance companies often have waiting periods that can reach as long as an entire year for certain conditions such as hip dysplasia, with an average of 15 days for less problematic illnesses.
Pet Assure runs a lost pet recovery service at no extra cost whatsoever. Owners will receive an ID tag for each pet they enroll, so if a pet decides to take an unexpected stroll without warning, then they can easily be returned to their owner using this 24/7 service. The person who finds the pet only needs to call the toll-free helpline and inform the operator of the ID number on the tag. The service might seem slightly pointless but it does allow pet owners to provide more than one emergency contact, and the call center is up and running at all times of the day. Since the service is free, it is a good extra.
With Pet Assure, there is no hassle. Owners don’t need to do anything at all, only to show the vet their ID card, after which the vet will file the claim and the discount will be automatically applied to the invoice. As such, customers do not have to pay upfront and then wait weeks for the reimbursement. The Pet Assure ID cards can be downloaded after enrolling, although customers will also receive it in the mail within 10 days.
Cost, Reimbursement, and Deductible
Since Pet Assure is not really an insurance provider, its rates are quite different compared to the usual policies available. For one, there is no deductible at all. Discounts are applied from the very first vet visit after enrollment and there are no caps – such as annual limits – on the payouts either.
This alone makes the service a worthwhile purchase, since the cost of the discount plan is likely to be worth the investment if the pet is taken to the vet regularly, especially since exam fees and wellness care is also covered.
Currently, Pet Assure offers only one payout rate, granting customers a 25% discount for a monthly premium costing between $6.58 to $11.95 depending on the species and whether the pet owner chooses an annual or a monthly billing cycle. The annual billing cycles are cheaper in the long run, so it is worth the upfront payment. Pet Assure also has a 45-day money-back guarantee, so if a customer changes their mind, they will be reimbursed in full, no questions asked.
There is no way to customize the Pet Assure plan. The only discount rate offered is 25%, which – while helpful – could still do with a bit of an increase, at least as an optional alternative. It would be nice if Pet Assure expanded its plans and gave customers the choice of a higher payout in exchange for a more costly premium.
In all honesty though, even though the 25% discount might seem like a low rate at first – especially when since to insurance companies can offer between 70-100% with their reimbursements – taking all the factors into account means the payout is likely just as good as the competition. Without a deductible, customers can save hundreds of dollars on an annual basis. What’s more, whereas some insurance companies may or may not accept a claim based on various exclusions, the discount plan is pretty straightforward when it comes to what it considers covered by the service.
Enrollment and Cancellation
Pet Assure makes the process of signing up very simple. There is no need to provide a pet’s entire medical history since preexisting conditions are treated the same as every other in-house treatment. To enroll your pet, all you have to do is visit the website, enter your zip code, and choose your plan.
After payment has been received, the Pet Assure ID will be immediately sent to you, which can be printed and used on that same day if needs be. The subscription will renew automatically at the end of the chosen billing period unless it is cancelled beforehand. You can cancel via email at any time, but be aware that refunds are only issued if they are requested within the first 45 days after enrolling your pet. If you have any trouble with the process, customer service is available via phone on workdays 8am to 6pm.
Pet Assure’s contact page is easy enough to use, and customer care can be reached via phone on workdays as well. The operators are helpful and can answer any question that may arise. However, the website is a bit spotty since mentions of the actual discount rate is pretty hard to come by, for instance, and the FAQ section could do with a bit more info. All in all, however, it is simple to navigate.
It has a helpful vet search engine where customers can check whether their vet has partnered with Pet Assure or not and, if the clinic is not on the list, then pet parents can invite new members themselves. The company is also active on social media and has received an A+ rating from Better Business Bureau to boot.
Pet Assure is a decent alternative to traditional pet insurance, especially for pets that are old or suffer from preexisting conditions that make them near impossible to insure. With standard insurance providers claims can be rejected, but a Pet Assure discount plan is a completely risk-free way to save some money on veterinary bills. Other animal species on top of cats and dogs can be enrolled as well, which is a feature few insurance providers can boast.
The company has no exclusions, too, meaning every in-house veterinary treatment is covered, even preexisting conditions, exams, and vaccinations. There is no deductible as is the case with traditional insurers, instead there is a fixed discount rate for which pet parents pay a monthly fee. The subscription is affordable and it comes with added perks, too, such as the 24/7 lost pet recovery service and a boarding discount. Pet Assure is definitely worth the money.
